About SEC!
Stars Educational Consortium (SEC) began in 2011 with it's famous Stars Middle School Debate Program which brings together local politicians and the young middle school students in the Districts these politicians serve. Politicians like State Rep Vicki Barnett, District 37 - Farmington and Harvey Santana, State Rep District 9 - Detroit, who graciously volunteer their time to judge debates and motivate students to excel!
Our middle school debate program helps students towards college readiness by focusing on real world controversial topics and issues. We use Common Core Aligned Lesson Plans, developed by a collaboration between teachers and SEC, to help guide us in our alignment. More information on these templates can be found on the Common Core section of this site.
The Debate Program is directed by Autumn Harris, a licensed Social Worker and graduate student at EMU and her sister Quisha Brown a MPA graduate of CMU. Both work diligently to connect students with organizations and community leaders that volunteer their time and resources to help our middle school students build upon their intellectual skills and knowledge about real world issues.
Our debate programs also help to keep students well-rounded by giving students a competitive edge when it comes to communication skills in an increasing technological world. It's so easy for today's generation to lose those important skills especially with all the technology so readily available and easy to use. Email and texting is good and quick, but it will never replace good wholesome communication and public speaking skills (or maybe I'm speaking to soon on that)
We believe that middle school years are where students begin to evolve into who they really are. This is when students are most impressionable, which is why Stars Debate has decided to create a consortium of programs by school district in Michigan. So far we have debate programs running in Farmington School District and Detroit School District (Don Bosco Hall) for Middle School Students. To bring Stars Debate Program to your school district please contact us via the information found at the bottom of this page.
